Why Should I Volunteer?

Different people volunteer for different reasons. Volunteering is when you offer to do some work for no pay. If you are in high school, you need to do a minimum of 40 hours to graduate! You might want to meet new people, and make new friends. You also might want to get Canadian work experience, or learn new skills to help you find a job. Or, you may just want to help.

If you want to volunteer somewhere, try and think about what you like to do. Once you have an idea of how or where you want to help, contact an organization or drop in to a Volunteer Centre to see what opportunities are available.

Why Volunteer?

If you’re in high school, you will need to finish at least 40 hours of volunteer work to graduate. If you are looking for a job and don’t have any (Canadian) work experience, volunteering can:

  • show you are responsible
  • give you someone to use as a reference
  • be a way for you to get a job in the future at the organization
  • give you Canadian work experience (volunteering counts as real work!)

If you want to make new friends, volunteering is a great way to do it. And if you want to make the world a better place, you can start by volunteering. The real question is, why NOT volunteer?
